Apple News: Apple Watch is a breakthrough device that won’t polarize the wearable computing world
In many ways, the Apple Watch and its introduction resembled many Apple products before it. It is a tightly integrated combination of meticulously designed hardware and software; it will even plug into Apple Pay. Like the Mac, iPod, and iPhone before it, it relies on a new input method, the digital crown. And starting at $349, while most Android wear devices are priced at $350 or less, it is priced comfortably above other products in the class. In other ways, though, it is different. It may be the least expensive debut of a new product category ever from Apple and the one the company has attacked with the most versions and accessories out of the gate. But whether you think that the Apple Watch will be a bit success or not, it’s worth noting that Apple hasn’t made any polarizing decisions in developing its new smartwatch.

Technology News: “Public by default” is the future of professional communication
In snail mail and phone calls, we expect a certain amount of privacy: we suppose that only we and our recipients are aware of the communication, or at least of the meaningful content of the information exchanged. Those technologies were built to allow exactly two people to communicate. The idea of unintended individuals snooping on our business, as mundane as it can be, is repulsive. As soon as we want to share information more broadly or collaborate with an extended team, though, things get very complicated, very fast. For example, Today, we have to use third-party companies, with dedicated phone numbers and passwords, to make a three-person conference call. Clearly, telephony’s standards were designed around one-to-one communication. The same goes for good old letters. If you want to send the same letter to several people, you can’t — you have to send several letters, with the same content. Twenty-five years ago, researchers from the CERN decided that this issue was too big to ignore: the need to keep track of the work of all their peers was hindered by the shortcomings of paper, information was lost and progress was slowed. Thus was born the World Wide Web.

Programming News: Frameworks: Necessary for large-scale software
The word “framework” is a derogatory term, suggesting over-complicated and unnecessary software. I still don’t really understand why Guice is useful (as I wrote a year ago), or what Spring even does. However, since joining Twitter three months ago, I’ve decided that good frameworks are necessary for large-scale software engineering. When hundreds of engineers work on a single project, there needs to be common high-level building blocks. The two big companies I’ve worked at (Google and Twitter) both have a common platform for building backend services that I would call frameworks. The Google and Twitter frameworks are hundreds of thousands of lines of code that allow engineers to quickly write services without thinking about the common stuff like logging, debugging, and monitoring (Twitter’s is open source). Just as important as reusing code, the frameworks allow people to reuse knowledge, since an engineer familiar with the framework can quickly understand, debug and modify other people’s applications.
